Small ruminant contribution in meat production in Libya

Egyptian Journal of sheep & Goat Sciences Vol. 10, (1) P: 13-18 – 2015 Small ruminant contribution in meat production in Libya Abdulkarim Ahtash Abstract: Sheep and Goat are considered the important agriculture activity overall grazing areas in Libya, since natural range represent the important parts of feed and forages for those animals. Barbary sheep and local goats breeds proved their potentiality through ability to withstand the adverse conditions such as drought, sub- maintenance feeding, heat stress, disease and poor management. Libyan Barbary sheep represents the dominant Libyan sheep breed (95%) in which their population is 6.5 million heads raised for meat and wool production. Local goats (Mahali) represents more than 90% of the number of goats in Libya (1.5 – 2.0 million). Sheep and goat flocks were spread overall the country specially the coast. Extensive production system was the main system used at semi-arid grazing area and mountain. Statistics showed that sheep and goat contribution of meat production during 1998-2009 ranged from 67 – 80.5%. It looks that Libya does not reach self-sufficient of meat production from small ruminants though the wide spread of these animals. It has recognized that production deficiency percentages from sheep and goats’ meat ranged from 49% to 55% during the same period. Key words: small ruminant, meat production, self-sufficient. arabic 7 English 48

Predicting the classes and distribution of salt-affected soils in Northwest Libya

Sodicity and salinity can adversely affect soil structure and are common constraints to plant growth in arid regions. Current remote sensing techniques cannot distinguish between the various classes of salt-affected soils. Field and laboratory measurements of salt-affected soils are time-consuming and expensive. Mapping of the salt-affected soils can be used in soil conservation planning to identify regions with different degrees of limitations. There is a need to use existing field and laboratory measurements to create maps of classes of salt-affected soils. The objectives of this study are to classify salt-affected soils, use existing field data to interpolate and validate geospatial predictions of the classes of salt-affected soils using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and create maps showing the different classes and distribution of salt-affected soils. The classification framework for salt-affected soils is based on electrical conductivity (ECe), soil pH and the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and provides four degrees of limitations to salt-affected soils: slight (normal soils), moderate (saline soils), severe (sodic soils), and extreme (saline-sodic soils). Spatial interpolation of the field data from northwestern Libya was verified by cross-validation, and maps of the salt-affected soils in the region were created. The majority of soils in this region of Libya are normal (slight degree of limitation). Twenty percent of the topsoil is saline-sodic (extreme degree of limitation). Land use recommendations and rehabilitation strategies can be developed from such maps of salt-affected soil classes. The methodology followed in this study can be applied to other arid regions around the world, particularly in developing countries where budgetary constraints limit detailed field and laboratory measurements of sodicity and salinity. arabic 11 English 70

Groundwater Pollution in Enjela Area- Southern Janzour City

The goal of this study is to investigate groundwater contamination from sewage disposal lake in Enjela area. In the study, twenty nine wells are assigned in seven sectors surrounding the sewage disposal area. The wells cover around 77 square kilometres. During this study, field and laboratory measurements are conducted. The field measurements include determining the location of wells related to the lagoon and the water depth related to mean sea level. The laboratory measurements include chemical and biological analyses for samples collected from the wells and sewage lagoon. Chemical analyses include determination of pH, EC, TDS, K+ , Na+ , Ca2+, Mg2+ , NO3 ˉ , PO4 3- , HCO3ˉ, and Clˉ. The indicators of biological contamination included coliform bacteria, COD, and BOD. According to the conducted analyses and measurements, the following results can be summarized. The study area is distinguished by the natural groundwater movement in the northeast direction. Concerning the chemical pollution, most of the wells are contaminated by potassium especially in the vicinity of sewage lagoon. For biological contamination, the wells are highly contaminated except those are far from lagoon. Due to its location and according to Simpson ratio, the groundwater in the study area is affected by seawater intrusion. Finally, based on this study, some recommendations are listed that might minimize the effect of this pollution if they are implemented. Keywords: Groundwater, aquifer, sewage water, chemical contamination, biological contamination
