A Pilot Study on Physical Activity and Perceived Barriers and Benefits During Pregnancy

Physical activity undertaken during pregnancy is well established to have a significant positive impact upon overall maternal health and birth outcomes. Despite this strong evidence, our knowledge of the level of physical activity undertaken by pregnant women and the perceived barriers and benefits of participating in exercise during pregnancy is poorly understood. Within this pilot investigation we determined the level of physical activity during pregnancy and their attitudes toward maternal exercise. Twelve gravid women (aged 34 ±4.6 y), at various stages of pregnancy (38.0 ±5.2wk) who attended the Royal Hospital for Women, Sydney, Australia, volunteered to take part in preliminary questionnaire through semi-instructed interview and complete a survey on their experience in physical activity prior to and during pregnancy. The investigation was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Royal Hospital for Woman, Randwick, Australia. Mean METs-h∙ wk-1 values of physical activity domains reported of (34.9MET-h∙wk-1). Occupational activity was the highest contribution to energy expenditure with 26.7MET-h.wk-1, whereas the lowest contribution was exercise accounted 0.7MET-h. wk-1. Participants reported light intensity (12.2MET-h.wk-1) as the highest level. Vigorous intensity was the lowest and more limited recorded 0.5MET-h.wk-1. A majority of women (60%) reported exercising regularly prior to pregnancy with five (5) of these women involved a structured physical training regimen prior to pregnancy. A majority of women (74.7%) reported walking was the most preferred activity during pregnancy. Levels of moderate- leisure activity (0.4 ±1.2 sessions∙wk-1, 0.7 ±2.3 hrs∙wk-1, 2.5METs-h∙wk-1) and strong-leisure activity (0.3 ±1.2 sessions∙wk-1, 0.5 ±1.7 hrs∙wk-1, 2.3METs-h∙wk-1) declined significantly (p

Occupational physical activity through work categories and their associations with energy expenditure

In Australia, a part of Duncombe et al. (2007) and Sui et al. (2013) no previous studies have collected longitudinal data on the prevalence of physical activity among pregnant women. Moreover, most studies have had excluded household, transport, and occupational activities and some had insufficient number of participants, which can affect the investigation of physical activity (Cheung et al., 2007; Duncombe et al., 2007a; Wilkinson et al., 2009). The aim of this investigation was to assess work activities among Australian pregnant women. A total of 200 healthy pregnant women were recruited from the Royal Hospital for Women at Randwick and Wollongong Hospital, NSW to participate in this study. Descriptive statistics were conducted for both type of activity across study stages using SPSS Ver 21. Results showed a significant (p < 0.05, at 0.000) decrease in weekly occupational energy expenditure (MET-h.wk-1 ) during postpartum (1.8 ±3.7 MET-h.wk-1 ) compared to pre-pregnancy (22.9 ±19.8 MET-h.wk-1 ) and during pregnancy (16.2 ±13.3 MET-h.wk-1 ).

The Association Between Exercise and Birth Outcomes

Background: Healthy women who participating in physical activity prior to pregnancy can safely continue to exercise during and after pregnancy. Exercise during pregnancy is associated with minimal risk and have indicated benefits such as reduce birth complication and enhance quality after pregnancy. The aim of this investigation is to identify the association between exercise and birth outcomes. Methods: This investigation was designed to assess the relation between exercise and birth outcomes. Medical data was collected from hospital medical record. Data was gathered from approximately 133 healthy women from Randwick Hospital for Women, Sydney and Wollongong Hospital, NSW, Australia. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics; Pearson correlation was conducted to evaluate the association between exercise and birth outcomes. Results: No association was observed between participation in physical activity prior to pregnancy, during the first, second and the third trimester and birth outcomes such as the baby’s physical condition, birth weight and risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Despite the few associations that were found, strong support for increased effect of exercise during pregnancy on birth outcomes was not observed for most of the birth-outcome variables. Perceived Barriers to Physical Activity during Pregnancy

Background: Pregnant women believe that participating in sufficient physical activity promotes health and wellbeing, but barriers that effect women’s ability to exercise requires additional investigation. The aim of this study to identify the barriers of physical activity and to examine the changes in exercise barriers arose throughout pregnancy. Methods: Modified exercise benefits and barriers scale (Sechrist et al., 1987), was used to evaluate barriers to exercise among 200 healthy pregnant women prior to, during and after pregnancy. This investigation was part of a large study conducted at the state of NSW, Australia. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics; one way repeated-measures ANOVA was conducted to evaluate the changes in exercise barriers during pregnancy. Results: The most important cited barrier was having no one to exercise with pre-pregnancy and where I live not suitable for exercise postpartum. Most women (75.4%) reported that the difficulty of exercise was the most powerful barrier to exercise during pregnancy. There are significant changes in barriers to participation in exercise arise during pregnancy. Conclusion: Increasing level of participation in physical activity during pregnancy should consider exercise barriers, specifically difficulty of exercise. Studies aiming to examine reasons for the changes in barriers during pregnancy are required. KEY WORDS: Physical activity, pregnancy, barriers
