A Study of Bacterial Contamination on Libyan Paper Banknotes in Circulation

Paper currency is one of the potential vectors to transmit diseases, since banknotes continuously pass through different hands, as a medium of exchange, which increases the possibility of transferring pathogenic microorganisms and thus cross contamination. This study was carried out on one hundred and ninety-eight paper currency notes that were collected randomly in the city of Tripoli, Libya, from different communities namely, petrol and gas stations, supermarkets, mini markets, cafeterias and fast food restaurants, etc. The samples consist of four pieces, each of currency (Dirham) denominations (250, 500, 1.000 and 5.000 notes). Conventional and current microbiological techniques were used in order to isolate and identify the species of microorganisms that resulted in the following percentages: Enterobacter agglomerans 19%, Pseudomonas spp. 16%, S. aureus, Enterobacter cloacae 11%, Klebsiella pneumonia 11% and E. coli 10%. These results indicate that Libyan banknotes are commonly contaminated with pathogenic bacteria, which have the possibility of spreading human diseases. Higher denomination currency showed lower contamination. Consequently, great care should be taken during the handling of money for the safety of human health. arabic 10 English 65

Necrotic Encephalitis associated with a Toxoplasma-like Protozoan Infection in Lambs

Introduction: A total of 32 young (1-3 months-old) lambs suffered from mortal neurological signs in a period of three months. The lambs were among the offspring of a herd of 300 sheep, in Tarhouna city, Libya. The affected lambs were initially treated with antibiotics, multivitamins and mineral supplements, however, none of these treatments attenuated the death toll among the small lambs. Methods: Three lamb carcasses were submitted to the National Center for Animal Health (NCAH) for post mortem examination. Gross pathological examination of the brains detected hydatid cysts and yellowish lesions within the cerebral cortex. Results: The histopathologic examination of the brain showed the presence of inflammatory lesions and necrotic features surrounded by granulomatous inflammatory patterns, which are accompanied by a few parasitic cysts. Ordinary and modified Ziehl-Neelsen stains for bacterial infection were performed, but the results did not strongly indicate bacterial infection. Toxoplasmosis, particularly T. gondii, and Neospora were first suspected. Immunohistochemistry testing for T. gondii did not show any conclusive indication for the presence of this pathogen. However, meticulous microscopic examination (100x) of the histopathologic features and the patterns of host-pathogen interaction of toxoplasmosis indicate that these lambs may have suffered from necrotic encephalitis associated with a different type of toxoplasmosis.

Whole Genome Sequence Analysis of the First Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecium Isolates from a Libyan Hospital in Tripoli

Abstract The purpose of the study was to investigate the molecular characteristics and genetic relatedness of the first reported cases of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) from the Tripoli Medical Center, Libya. In total, 43 VRE isolates were obtained from various clinical sites throughout the years 2013-2014, including 40 vanA-type and 2 vanB-type vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolates and 1 vanC1-type Enterococcus gallinarum. Of the 42 E. faecium, 19 isolates were subjected to whole genome sequencing. Core genome multilocus sequence typing (cgMLST) analysis revealed three sequence clusters (SCs) of clonally related isolates, which were linked to different hospital wards. The first two VRE isolates, isolated early 2013 from patients in the medical intensive care unit, were grouped in SC1 (MLST [ST] 78, vanB) and differed in only 3 of 1423 cgMLST alleles. The SC2 (n = 16, special care baby unit, neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric surgery ward, and oncology ward) and SC3 (n = 1, antenatal ward) were all ST80 vanA-VRE, but the single SC3 isolate differed in 233 alleles compared with SC2. Within SC2, isolates differed in 1-23 alleles. Comparison with a larger database of E. faecium strains indicated that all isolates clustered within the previously defined hospital clade A1. A combination of Resfinder and mlplasmid analysis identified the presence of resistance genes on different plasmid predicted genetic elements among different SCs. In conclusion, this study documents the first isolates causing outbreaks with VRE in the Libyan health care system. Further surveillance efforts using molecular typing methods to monitor spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria in the Libyan health care system are urgently needed.
