First seroprevalence investigation of epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus in Libya

Abstract Background: Epizootic haemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a vector-borne viral disease of domestic and wild ruminants. Epizootic haemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) is transmitted by Culicoides spp. EHDV is a member of the Orbivirus genus within the Reoviridae family. It shares many morphological and structural characteristics with other members of the genus, such as the bluetongue virus, African horse sickness virus, and equine encephalosis virus. Aims: The purpose of our study was to investigate the epidemiological situation of EHDV in Libya in order to gain some knowledge about the presence of this virus in the country. Methods: In this study, we investigated the seroprevalence of EHDV in Libya, testing 855 blood samples collected during 2015. The samples were collected from domestic ruminants (cattle, sheep, and goats) originating from 11 provinces of Libya. Sera were tested by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and positive samples confirmed by serum neutralization test. Results: The overall seroprevalence of EHDV was estimated to be 4% (95% confidence intervals = 2.8%–5.4%). Small ruminant seroprevalence was significantly (p = 0.016) higher than that found in cattle. Neutralizing antibodies against EHDV-6 were detected in a sheep from the western region of Libya. Conclusion: This study suggests that EHDV has circulated or is circulating in Libya, and sheep could play an important role in the epidemiology of EHDV, and the virus may still be circulating in North Africa. Keywords: EHD, EHDV-6, Seroprevalence, Libya.

Antimicrobial Sensitivity Patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates Obtained From Foot Ulcer Diabetes Patients in Tripoli, Libya.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most invasive organism that causes severe tissue damage in diabetic foot ulcers. A major problem in P. aeruginosa infection because of that it is commonly exhibits a high degree of resistance to antimicrobial agents .To improve appropriate antimicrobial therapy and reduce the incidence of antibiotics resistant bacteria, information on the antibiotic susceptibility to this bacterium is urgently needed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to isolate and determinate the antimicrobial susceptibility of the P. aeruginosa in diabetic foot ulcers patients. Methods: This study was carried out over the period between June 2014 to April 2015 at Tripoli Medical Center. A total of 120 bacterial isolates were cultured onto bacteriological media such as nutrient agar, MacConkey agar and blood agar. Identification of retrieved bacterial isolates was done using standard diagnostic microbiological laboratory methods and antibiogram was determined by VITEK ® 2 compact automated system. Results: Twenty one strains of P. aeruginosa from 120 diabetic foot ulcers were detected. P. aeruginosa isolates exhibited multidrug resistance to Ampicillin, Augmenting, Cefuroxime, Cefoxitin, Cefazolin, Ceftriaxone, Trimethoprim/sulfamethzole, Piperacillin. However, all isolates of P. aeruginosa were 100 % sensitive to Imipenem. Conclusion: P. aeruginosa infections of diabetic foot ulcers patients have multi-drug resistant. Imipenem is the empirical antibiotic of the choice. Key words: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, diabetic foot ulcer, antibiotics resistance arabic 17 English 114

Effect of low and high doses of Salmonella enteritidis PT4 on experimentally infected chicks

Chicks (1-d-old, three groups, each containing 50 chicks) were inoculated with 2×102 and 2×108 CFU ofSalmonella enteritidis; the third group were kept as uninoculated control. Five birds from each group were euthanized at intervals from 6 h to 4 weeks post-inoculation (pi). In the lowdose groupS. enteritidis was isolated from 60% cecal samples at 18 h pi. and from 20% of livers at 3 d pi. Individual variation in the frequency ofS. enteritidis recovery was observed in this group. The clearance of salmonella from the organs was faster in the low-dose group, and salmonella was not isolated from the liver and cecum at 21 and at 27 d, pi, respectively. However, in the high-dose group,S. enteritidis was isolated from all ceca and 80% of liver 6 h pi, and salmonella was detected in the cecum and liver throughout the experiment. Serous typhlitis and unabsorbed yolk sac were the most prevalent lesions in both groups. Granulomatous nodules in the cecum were found occasionally in some cases in both inoculated groups, which can play a role as reservoirs in carrier chicks.
